SUSTAINABILITY ETHOS
Sustainability for Hasha includes various ‘green efforts’ the business applies to make it more eco-friendly and socially responsible. As the business largely operates in the ecotourism industry through the sales of e-bike tours and hires, the concept of sustainability is practised and promoted. The use of e-bikes allows people to see the island in a low-impact way when compared to activities such as motorbikes, jeeps or fuel-powered boats, as well as allowing them to view the nature of the island in a much more immersive, first-hand experience; not to mention the added health benefits it provides. This alone also helps in encouraging people to protect and preserve the natural environment as much as possible.
At Hasha, we recognise there is still a long way to go with the production of the energy used to power e-bikes; specifically, the production of the batteries used to power the bikes. Although using an e-bike is far more favourable in environmental terms than the use of other CO2-emitting vehicles, it is still arguable that using a conventional bicycle without the ecological costs of batteries and electricity is better. However, when utilised correctly, ebikes provide a great option for a more sustainable transport model for tourists staying on Ibiza, who are able to cover greater distances in relative comfort when compared to the conventional bicycle. Despite the initial costs, both environmental and money-wise, the e-bike is predominantly maintenance-free and has a considerably long lifecycle.
How we can do better…
Over the coming months and years, we are striving to do better, with the target of charging all of our ebikes solely from renewable energy. Currently, we produce an estimated 24,375g CO2e/kWh (24.4kg) (figures based on data from EEA & www.co2everything.com) by charging our ebikes over the course of a year.
We have found that transparency in business is in actuality scarce, and very often has a high degree of green-washing, few companies are holding themselves accountable for their negative impacts on the environment than, as consumers, wish for. That is why we decided to be straightforward about the environmental costs of our business. There is more that we can be doing, and we want to recognise this to make the improvements needed. By highlighting this, we hope that more businesses and customers alike will find themselves more conscious of their ecological impact and look for strategies for real change.
Reuse, reduce, recycle; this is a worldwide slogan which we at Hasha aim to apply across the business, particularly with a focus on reuse. Maintaining and rebuilding parts on our e-bikes as opposed to buying new (when unnecessary), is one of the ways that we incorporate this ideology. For example, we practise methods taken from the Circular Economy model. (which involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products) By choosing to update the parts on our e-bikes to maximise their operational lifespan in a safe and reliable manner. With nearly every product we use in our lives, the biggest environmental impact is applied during the manufacturing process. 75% of the CO2 output in an ebikes life cycle is produced during manufacturing. By adopting these concepts, we can drastically reduce our consumption as a business and use up less of the planet’s precious resources. Alongside this strategy, we also see the huge benefits of rental of luxury products, effectively making our luxury items shared products, in turn further reducing manufacturing.
We hope that by adopting this strategy, we can help minimise our environmental impact and, in turn, help to minimise your impact as a consumer by choosing to book with us here at Hasha Ibiza.
